The funniest fundraiser around returns one week from today! Last year’s event gained rave reviews from participants, who enjoyed the food, drinks, and comedy provided by members of SPT Theatre. A Satirical Undertaking: Celebrating the Life of Mayor Ron Corbett will feature the same format as last year: a party rounded out by a mock eulogy for outgoing Cedar Rapids mayor, Ron Corbett. By attending this event, you can be assured that you’ll have a blast while supporting The History Center and our mission to preserve and share Linn County history.

Catering from Winifred’s will include:

  • Applewood smoked pork tenderloin with caramelized onion on foccacia bread
  • Miniature twice baked baby Yukon Gold potatoes (vegetarian)
  • Black bean empanadas (vegetarian)
  • Fresh tomato bruschetta (vegetarian)
  • Crab dip with crackers
  • Seared Ahi Tuna with wasabi slaw on wonton crisp
  • Fruit Kabobs (vegetarian)
  • Grand Marnier chocolate tarts (vegetarian)
  • Miniature apple crisp tarts (vegetarian)

If this sounds like an event you’d like to attend, make sure to get your tickets today! We hope that you’ll join us for this special event celebrating the history of the Douglas Mansion and supporting the future of The History Center.

We need your help!

Your support — in any amount — for our Landmark & Legacy campaign is essential as we work to restore the Douglas Mansion, preserve Linn County history, and define The History Center for the future.

The Douglas Mansion is the perfect location for The History Center. Ideally located near many iconic Linn County structures and institutions, the mansion provides excellent space for both exhibits and programming in addition to being a historically significant treasure in and of itself.

A challenge to be met

There is a very good chance for significant support from the State of Iowa’s Enhance Iowa program via the Community Attraction and Tourism (CAT) fund. To unlock the funding, however, we’ve been asked to demonstrate robust support from our community.

That’s where you — and your friends and neighbors — come in.

From now until November 15, each gift to The History Center’s Landmark & Legacy campaign helps us show this essential support from the community we serve. The total number of gifts — not the size of any individual gift — is what matters. We’re nearing our goal, and your help is critical.

Can you give $1? $5? $25? $50? More? Your gift in any amount simply could not be more important than it is right now!

The moment is now

The History Center preserves and illuminates the stories that are the foundation on which this community is built. The Douglas Mansion — itself a priceless artifact — will be the perfect facility in the perfect location for this work. And you are the perfect partner to help us bring this to fruition with a gift to the campaign — a gift that will be multiplied significantly by the CAT grant we are seeking.

With a solid business plan, an achievable campaign goal, and an unwavering devotion to sharing the history of Linn County, The History Center is ready to begin the next chapter in its own story.

We hope you’ll help us write it.

Your one-time gift to this essential capital campaign will ensure the Douglas Mansion is beautifully restored to serve as the home of The History Center. Gifts of $1000 or greater will be acknowledged in perpetuity in the building and can be paid over a three-year period.

This photo was taken at the Cedar Rapids YWCA circa late 1940s. If you think you may know one or more of the people in this photo, please comment below. Our curator will contact you if we need more information.

The History Center is launching a new initiative to identify photos in our collections. With our History Detective posts, you have the chance to help us learn more about Linn County history! There are some photos in our collections that have little or no identification. We are sharing some of these in the hopes that people in and around Linn County might be able to help us identify individuals in the photos.

As we approach the move to our new home, the staff and board of The History Center is doing some branding research. What this means is that we’re exploring the best ways to present our organization so that the community is fully aware of our mission and offerings. By taking a brief survey, you can help us with this research. We want to hear how you would describe The History Center in five words. Your input will help shape the future of the The History Center by helping us see how the organization is perceived and how we should market ourselves going forward.

Join us on Tuesday, March 13th 6:00 p.m. to explore the photographic excellence of Cedar Rapidian William Baylis. Historian Mark Stoffer Hunter will be giving a talk centered around The History Center’s “Snapshots with William Baylis” exhibit located on the 3rd Floor of the Cedar Rapids Public Library. The talk itself will be located at Whipple Auditorium, within the Public Library.

William Baylis captured Linn County through landscape photography and preserved its rich history through his 25,000 credited pictures. The exhibition highlights many of Baylis’ work in both postcard and print form. The exhibit will be opened until August 2018, but we highly encourage you to join us at the “Back in Time with William Baylis” talk!

This event is free to the public.
